The Minimalist's Guide to Accessorizing for the Beach...by Kathia Ogando
I know.... I know... how can I (of all people) be telling someone to minimize the amount of accessories they wear? Just hear me out...
(KAT fact coming up)
I am a minimalist... although I love accessories, I feel they don't need to overpower an outfit (and this is my humble opinion... not a jab at the lovely layering trend we have going on right now). When accessorizing, my goal is to make the pieces I wear complement perfectly... creating a seamless flow while keeping practicality in mind (especially when basking in the sun). The following are my suggestions...
Guideline #1
- Safety first... protect yourself, your eyes and skin: bring water to make sure you stay hydrated, sunglasses and sunblock (you can still tan if you wear sunblock; just make sure to get a lower SPF).
Guideline #2
- Wear plastic jewelry (one of the few places where it's not considered tacky is at the beach/pool). The last thing you want is to be branded by your hoop earring on the side of your face after the sun has been baking it. If you don't intend on taking your jewelry off, keep it simple... don't choose items that will leave you with crazy tan lines. If you're not feeling the plastic, then...
Guideline #3
- Wear fashion jewelry. For those unsure of what I mean, don't wear your real jewelry. Don't take the expensive stuff on this outing... exposure to the sun and other elements will definitely make it lose its luster. Quality costume jewelry (believe it or not) is made with stronger metals that can withstand more abuse (http://www.katalistonline.com/) (I'll tell you more about the power of brass and rhodium later).
Guideline #4
- Don't wear any... some cute studs and a bangin' suit will get everyone's attention... my top pick is the Lila Nikole Collection (http://www.lilanikole.com/). This South Florida based company is known for producing exotic, alluring and intriguing wearable swimwear for women who love to glam up their beach wardrobe. Each garment is hand-made and not factory-processed. Their styles are to die for... below are just three of the most recent designs showcased in the fashion show held at the Setai in Miami Beach on 07/17/09. Oh, and if you don't want to get caught at a pool party wearing what someone else has on... they have a 'Signature Collection' which is made in various quantities and then the style is retired which means you'll basically have a collectors' item (yum).
