Fort Lauderdale, FL

Q: What does your job entail?

A: My job consists of doing a little of everything. First, I am head designer, so all custom orders and designs of the line come from me. I also am in charge of general office things, traveling for shows and events, and giving guidance with the designing of the Web site and promotional materials. I guess I do just about a little of everything.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I met a makeup artist and did a test photo shoot with her. She called me to work for Ja Rule. On the shoot, I met the owners of some national magazines and was booked for the next few weeks. The demand was there, so I put up an online Web site and that was the creation of Lila Nikole Collection formerly A Swimwear.

Q: What was your job search like?

A: Fortunately, my job found me.

Q: What do you like best about your job?

A: I love that I am doing what I love. Every day is a new venture or opportunity, and I have been fortunate to work with some amazing people.

Q: What are some of the challenges?

A: Some of the challenges are growth, and learning the ever-changing fashion industry. Just trying to keep up with all of the things going on. This is my first company, so I definitely will say the growing period is the hardest.

Q: What skills are required to perform your job?

A: Great communication skills, dedication, fashion forecasting, pattern making, designing abilities and business smarts.

Q: What are the educational and licensing requirements?

A: I have a fashion-design degree from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. An advertising and marketing background would be good for this type of business.

Q: What advice would you give someone looking to pursue this career?

A: My advice for someone trying to pursue their dream job is to be dedicated, to love what you are doing and never let anyone put you down. Believe in yourself and in your ability to achieve, and you can do anything you want. Go for your dream and make it a reality. Also, network and make good connection and positive relationships with people in your field of business.
